Cem Olcay Testere is a new AUv3 Supersaw Synthesizer plugin for iOS and macOS with a unique distribution curve control system.
The term SuperSaw was first introduced by Roland in 1996 with the JP-8000 and subsequently registered as a trademark. But it didn’t stop with the synth. Many other companies have adopted the concept and incorporated it into their synthesizers.
Cem Olcay, who released the Nikaya wavetable and FM synth in May, has now created a new Synthesizer called Testere built around this concept.
Cem Olcay Testere
Testere is a new supersaw Synthesizer plugin for iOS and macOS. Cem Olcay Testere utilizes seven oscillators, where each voice stacks seven sawtooth waveforms. They are, however, not traditional saw waves.
Instead, each oscillator is a wavetable oscillator with various saw waveforms. The user has per-voice control over the detune, phase, waveshape (flavor), stereo pan, and an additional sine-wave sub-oscillator.
The handy thing is that you don’t have to adjust all the oscillators individually. Testere offers distribution curves to control these offsets. You can dial in a curve shape and a spread amount. Then, the synth applies the resulting values across all oscillators with smooth interpolation.
Cem Olcay promises that the system allows for infinite combinations, from tight analog-like stacks to vast, animated swarms, all with a minimal set of parameters.
On the second UI page, you have a single global LFO with an assignable target selectable from various options, including detune, phase, flavor, and more. Next to this, you have an analog-style ladder filter with a dedicated rise and fall envelope.
There is also a classic ADSR amp envelope per voice, as well as a stereo ping-pong delay to refine your sounds. As a bonus, Cem Olcay also added an arpeggiator to the Testere Synthesizer.
First Impression
Cem kindly gave me the app to test. It’s a beautiful and interesting Supersaw Synthesizer with an intuitive interface.
As I mentioned with the Nikaya, I’d also like to see more features added to the Testere, making it more comprehensive and flexible, such as more filter options and modulation.
Cem Olcay Testere is available now for $7,99/8,99€ on the Apple App Store. It runs as a standalone and AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPhone/iPad) and macOS (native Apple Silicon only).
