Virsyn Tera Pro is a new multi-synthesis modular polyphonic Synthesizer for iPad with AUv3 support, MPE, and over 1800+ presets.

In recent months, developments regarding the Tera Pro Synthesizer have been somewhat quieter. Looking, however, at the developments over the past two years, there’s no reason to complain.

Harry added wavetable synthesis, 6-operator FM synthesis, Plaits algorithms, and more. Now, there is good news for those who have purchased the BrainZ in-app purchase back in 2023.

Virsyn has just released an excellent update with eight additional engines for the BrainZ engine.

Virsyn Tera 2.3

These are the algorithms that Mutable Instruments implemented in the Plaits module in a final update, including classic waveshapes (VA), phase distortion, DX-7-style FM synthesis (FM 1, FM2, FM3), wave terrain synthesis, string machine, and four square voices (VA).

Indeed, this update expands the Tera Pro’s massive synthesis horizons even further. Additionally, it comes with new presets in a new BrainZ II category, showcasing the new engines.

Virsyn Tera Pro 2.3 is a free update for existing users, and the update for BrainZ is also available at no additional cost to existing users. Tera Pro is out now for $5,99 and the BrainZ module is available now for $9,99 USD as an in-app purchase.

It runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iPad, iPhone and macOS.

Update from February 2, 2024

Tera Pro has seen impressive increases in its synthesis capabilities over the past months. This is available in the form of additional wavetable synthesis, colorful Mutable Instruments Plaits algorithms, or a full 6-operator FM synthesis engine.

That wasn’t enough for developer Harry Gohs, and he has now released another engine extension for Tera Pro.

The new RingZ engine extension supercharges the synth with the popular open-source Mutable Instruments Rings algorithms. It introduces resonator and physical modeling synthesis into Tera Pro.

Virsyn Tera Pro 2.1

Just like the original Eurorack module, the RinZ engine has three modes: modal synthesis, sympathetic and string resonators. It also features the same parameters for shaping your sounds: frequency, structure, brightness, damping…

All parameters are fully modulable with LFOs, envelopes, and more. Very interesting is the use of multi-segment envelopes, which allow you to create very complex, organic-sounding sounds.

A lovely, powerful upgrade for the Tera Pro Synthesizer. The app already offeered a variety of synthesis options. Physical modeling was still missing here, and the RingZ iAP now does this job.

Virsyn Tera Pro 2.1 is a free update for existing Virsyn Tera Pro users. The new RingZ upgrade is available for $9,99 via an in-app purchase.

Update from August 20, 2023

If the synthesis possibilities of the Tera Pro modular synthesizer are still not enough for you, there is now additional synthesis power.

Virsyn has released with update 1.9 a complete FM engine that can be unlocked via an in-app purchase. It’s called FM 7 and adds a full 6-operator FM Synthesizer with algorithms, dedicated controls, LFO, and more to the modular synth.

The engine also comes with a complete FM operator editor, giving you control over the operators, including all parameters (coarse, fine, detune…), operator envelope, and more. And yes, Tera Pro and the FM7 engine are also fully MPE compatible.

The new FM engine is available now via in-app purchase for $9,99. Buy once, and use it on iOS (iPad/iPhone) and macOS.

Update From February 27th, 2023

The Tera Pro is one of the most powerful synthesizers on iOS. Thanks to its modular engine, you can create very complex sounds. Now it’s growing again.

Virsyn has released a new oscillator module add-on called Brainz. It features 16 unique oscillator algorithms based on the open-source Mutable Instruments Plaits macro oscillator.

Once installed, Tera Pro receives an infusion of diverse synthesis forms, including additive, virtual analog, FM, waveshaper, wavetable, and more. This massively enriches the sound palette of the Tera Pro – very nice!

The new Brainz module is available now for $9,99 USD as an in-app purchase.

One wavetable oscillator is not enough. Tera Pro now has a second wavetable oscillator with the same power as the first that can be activated using the new Waves in-app purchase. This gives you tons of new possibilities to create new sounds.

Harry Grohs, also known as Virsyn, ships the new update with 50 new presets exclusive to the new engine upgrade. Then, the new updates include a good amount of bug fixes:

  • double FORMANT module

  • missing AUv3 parameter ( FX & ARP )

  • pan modulation

  • Pitchbend problems

  • MPE: pitchblende glitch for reused notes fixed

  • MPE: allow same note to be used more than once

Great update for Tera Pro.

Update

Update from October 27, 2022

Tera Pro is growing. Virsyn has released a new update 1.5, which comes with a new powerful synthesis function. It’s called Waves and can be unlocked with an in-app purchase. Once activated, the already large feature set of the Tera Pro expands to include a wavetable oscillator.

The Waves oscillator offers all the known functions of a classic wavetable oscillator. You can pitch and fine-tune the wavetable, morph through it, and use sync, FM, and phase modulation. Additionally, there is an interesting 8-bit resolution option onboard.

Virsyn Tera Pro 1.5

You can load wavetables from a built-in factory library or import your own. It supports single waveforms or wavetables up to 1024 waves. Each waveform can have 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, or 4096 samples so what you know from other wavetable synths.

Like in the other Tera Pro oscillators, the parameters of Waves could all be modulated with envelopes, LFOs, and more. A very exciting update that makes Tera Pro even more extensive and versatile.

Virsyn Tera Pro is available now for $9,99 USD. The Waves module in-app purchase is available for $7,99 USD. It runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iOS and macOS.

The AUv3 plugin format was a revolution for the iOS world. Initially, apps could only be used in a single instance. Thanks to AUv3, you can use them like plugins on PC/Mac in multiple instances on your iOS device. A big step forward but it is also a more stable format than AudioBus and IAA.

From the developer side, it was a rather slow move to AUv3. Many have only decided to port apps after a long time. Today Virsyn released Tera Pro, a major update for its modular polyphonic Synthesizer. Of course wth AUv3 support.

Virsyn Tera Pro

Tera Pro by Harry Gohs, aka Virsyn, is a new 128-voice modular polyphonic Synthesizer for iPad. It is the successor to the Tera Synthesizer for iOS, initially released in 2014. It brings together again all major sound synthesis methods in one app. You can explore virtual analog, FM, waveshaping, or wavetable synthesis. Plus there are some bits of physical modeling, additive and vocal synthesis in the engines. Unlimited oscillator fun.

Then, you have a mixer with an oscilloscope with direct visual feedback, a multimode filter, a multi-effects processor, a deep modulation engine with LFOs, envelopes… and a versatile step sequencer. A lot of what you know from the first Tera version. The engine allows you to create mono, dual or polyphonic patches with split voices.

Virsyn Tera Pro

Virsyn promises an organic warm sound character thanks to vintage voice modeling technology. Anyone who use the non-Pro version of Tera knows that the synth is a modular synth without cables. This is also the case in the new Pro version. Here, the user can easily connect modules and build up big modular patches. A lot of menu diving but without virtual cable salad.

Playability & Connectivity

Tera Pro supports MPE, Bluetooth MIDI, and Ableton Link. So the internal sequencer keeps in sync with other iPad music-making apps. Virsyn ships the app with over 1800 factory presets. A huge number and perfect to get a first impression without going deep directly.

One of the biggest highlights of the Pro version is certainly the support for the AUv3 plugin format. The synth is now a plugin that can be used in multiple instances. Besides the AUv3 version, the app also works in standalone with Inter-App-Audio (IAA).

Sound Demo

Doug from the Sound Test Room YouTube channel was able to preview the app and released a large sound demo.

Feature side, Tera Pro is not a massive upgrade. But I am very happy to see that the modular “all-rounder” Synthesizer from Virsyn now also supports AUv3. Hopefully, Harry Gohs will enable in the near future also the option to use it on M1 computers. That would be great.

Virsyn Tera Pro is available now for iPad for an introductory price of $9,99 USD for a limited time.

  1. Virsyn Tera Synth was also AUv3. Tera pro’s sound engine seems to be rewritten (less aliasing and sounds less harsh).
The user interface has improved a lot. On the downside, it’s a bit more CPU hungry.
    Skål!
