Behringer Halos is a clone/replica of the Mutable Instruments Rings physical modeling module for Eurorack.
In June, Behringer released Skies, a clone of the Mutable Instruments Clouds granular Synthesizer, one of the most popular modules in Eurorack. In the official video, you could already see a Rings clone from Behringer.
It took a month, and now it’s ready for shipping from the factory. Behringer has just released Halos, a clone of the best-known open-source Mutable Instruments Rings module. Rings into Clouds on budget, here we go.
Behringer Halos
Halos is a new 14HP physical modeling/resonator Synthesizer voice for Eurorack based on the open-source Mutable Instruments Rings module.
Like the original, Behringer Halos uses a digital engine that can be excited by various sources, including noise, triggers, envelopes, and more.
As it uses the same code, you can find the identical resonator modes: Modal Resonator, Sympathetic Strings, and Non-Linear/ Dispersion Strings that offer authentic models of strings, membranes, and tubes.
The modal synthesis-based engine delivers a pseudo-polyphony of up to 4 voices, adding depth and complexity to your patches. According to Behringer’s video, there are also hidden engines, including an FM synth, an organ machine, and a reverb.
Behringer hasn’t changed anything about the interface either. You can control it with the same parameters, including frequency, structure, brightness, damping, and position.
Besides manual control, each parameter is also CV controllable with an adjustable attenuverter. According to Behringer, Halos offers high-resolution CV control with up to 16-bit accuracy for ultra-precise modulation.
There is one new feature, however. The Behringer version has a USB-C port on the front panel for firmware updates. This isn’t available on the MI Rings.
First Impression
Rings into Clouds on a budget will soon be possible. A release that was to be expected after Behringer also released the Clouds eh Skies.
However, all these MI clones have one downer: alternative firmware releases can’t be loaded onto them because they use different hardware than the original or other clones.
Behringer Halos is available now for pre-order for £89/109€.
