Crows Electromusic has turned its Ovum drone Synthesizer into an analog oscillator bank module for Eurorack.
In 2023, I reported on the Ovum from indie company Crows Electromusic. This is a straightforward 5-oscillator drone Synthesizer. It has few parameters, but depending on how you play it and what you combine it with, it can be a super fun instrument.
Crows Electromusic has now transformed the Ovum into a Eurorack module with a slightly different feature set that brings more flexibility into play compared to the portable drone synth.
Crows Electromusic Ovum Eurorack
Ovum for Eurorack is a 20HP module, featuring a bank of five analog triangle-core oscillators. Each of the five oscillators has controls for the pitch, level (slider), and wave shape that range from a bright square wave to a crisp triangle wave.
Unlike the Crows Electromusic Ovum desktop, each oscillator of the Eurorack version offers a switch, allowing you to switch it into a slow modulation signal, aka LFO.
This gives you the option to use the Ovum Eurorack as a 5-analog oscillator drone bank or modulation source. Since each one has its own switch, you can also create a wild combination and use only two oscillators as a drone synth and the other three as an LFO.
All five oscillators output at full volume of 10Vpp (+/- 5V) and have individual outputs that are normalled to the main audio output on the right.
First Impression
I really like the Ovum adaptation to Eurorack; it makes sense. Add a colorful filter and effects, and you have a fun modular drone synth. I would have liked to be able to make FM between the oscillators, maybe we will see this in a Mk2 version.
Crows Electromusic Ovum for Eurorack is hand-built in Vancouver (Canada) and is available now for $149 USD. The official Reverb.com store handles the European orders.
