CubuSynth Arkarion is a new massive analog synth voice for Eurorack with digitally controlled signal routing, giving you patch storage.
Getting started in the Eurorack world can be challenging. Where to start, which oscillators, filters, etc? Synth Voices are a good alternative, as they combine many functions into one module and offer a ready-made voice at a lower cost than individual modules.
CubuSynth from Portugal today introduced Arkarion, a new synth voice for Eurorack with a very unique modern approach that combines analog and digital technologies.
CubuSynth Arkarion
Arkarion is a new, 42HP fully featured analog synth voice for Eurorack. At its core are two analog VCOs with various selectable waveforms.
The CubuSynth Arakion’s first oscillator offers tune and fine-tune controls as well as both exponential and linear FM.
The feature set of oscillator 2 is different, as it offers a waveform selection knob for blending from sine wave to triangle wave to sawtooth. Plus, you have exponential FM and through-zero FM inputs with dedicated attenuators.
Then, it hosts a multimode filter with selectable lowpass, bandpass, highpass, and allpass. It is fully manual and CV-controllable with cutoff and resonance knobs. Both CV inputs also have dedicated attenuators.
On the modulation side, it has a flexible envelope generator with three modes. You can use it as a rise/fall envelope, or in loop or gated loop modes for LFO behavior. There are also two voltage-controlled one-knob LFOs.
Additionally, it hosts a random voltage source that a gate input can trigger. It’s a perfect function to add a more unpredictable vibe to parameters. Alongside this, you can find two VCAs for controlling modulation strengths, and more.
To round off the sound, CubuSynth Arkarion also features a tape-style delay processor with three tweakable parameters: delay mix, feedback, and time. Neat, the latter is also CV controllable.
Digital Control – Patch Storage
So far, Arkarion is a classic analog synth voice that’s also familiar from other manufacturers. The many FM options and the delay are nice extras. The highlight, however, is its internal digital engine.
Unlike most synth voices for Eurorack, Arkarion offers a digitally controlled DNA patch system represented by the lovely, colorful LED circle.
Yes, you read it right. You can save the parameter settings in up to 64 patch storage slots in 8 banks of 8. On top of that, it also includes a randomizer engine with which you can randomize the internal routings via a button press or gate input.
Press on it, and you get a new patch. According to CubuSynth, it’s a 16-bit randomizer that can generate over 65000 routing combinations that you can access in the Arkarion synth voice module.
The DNA patch system also has a gene expression/modification knob, giving you real-time sound shaping options, with both manual and CV control.
On the connection side, almost every function has its own output or CV input, which allows users to work very flexibly with the voice. You can play it with a tradtional 1v/oct and gate input or the 3.5mm TRS MIDI input that has independent CV and gate outputs.
First Impression
In recent years, many Eurorack synth voices have come onto the market, from small to large companies like Behringer, often with very similar feature sets.
In my opinion, CubuSynth has succeeded in building one of the most modern synth voices available to date—analog sound but without foregoing the advantages of digital technology. Great release.
