Soniccouture Polarity Tension is a new dual-layer granular virtual instrument for Kontakt Player created in collaboration with K/V.

Yesterday, I reported on the latest Kontakt 8.6 update, which introduces six new, helpful MIDI tools. These can be used with the official NI virtual instruments or with hundreds, even thousands, of third-party virtual instruments.

One of the latest comes from the developers of Soniccouture, who have created a new granular instrument called Polarity Tension.

Polarity Tension is a new dual-layer granular virtual instrument for Kontakt Player designed in collaboration with Ramon Kerstens and Richard Veenstra of K/V.

For Polarity Tension, Soniccouture built an entirely new sound library (825 MB) from custom recordings of industrial machinery, extended string techniques, and abstract vocalizations.

These, in turn, are embedded in a new dual-layer granular engine that was developed specifically for the library. The engine consists of four interface pages: macros, grains, synth, and effects.

On the main page, Polarity Tension features four macro controls, which shape and twist the sound with unpretentious results. Also, here, you can drag and drop user samples into the samples, making the engine very flexible.

Then the grains tap offers all the controls you expect from a granular engine, but times two, because each layer has its own set of parameters: position, scan, jitter, and more. This section also gives you the option to change the samples, apply a grain LFO, and more.

One step further, you have the synth section with all the traditional synth controls like a filter with a dedicated ADSR envelope, amp ADSR envelope, LFO, and more.

The last tab has a multi-FX processor that is applied to both layers. It includes various Kontakt-based effects, including stereo, EQ, Replika, and more.

A highlight is the IR Reverb module that offers Soniccouture’s custom impulse library built up over many years and recording sessions. Not to forget is that the library is also fully NKS compatible.

According to Soniccouture, Polarity Tension is designed to create immersive sonic worlds from raw, physical sounds.

First Impression

An exciting new Kontakt library from Soniccouture. Anyone who likes organic soundscapes and textures will get their money’s worth here.

Soniccouture Polarity Tension is available for an introductory price of 89€ instead of 149€ until September 16th, 2025. It runs as a virtual instrument in Kontakt Player 7 or 8 and Kontakt 7 or 8.
