Lectric Panda has turned its Automata MIDI sequencer and Stage amp into free plugins for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

When a plugin hits the market, the developer decides whether to offer it as a commercial product or give it away for free. Depending on its success, the decision can always be reversed. This may also have been the consideration behind these two now free plugins.

Lectric Panda has today announced that its Automata ($35) and Stage ($15) plugins are now available as free downloads.

Lectric Panada Automata

Lectric Panda Automata

Automata is a unique Cellular Automata-based MIDI sequencer plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Unlike traditional sequencers, Lectric Panda Automata uses one-dimensional cellular automation to generate new information for the sequencer.

Here, each step creates a new row and shifts the history upwards. Only the current generation is used for MIDI parameters. The state of the current step is projected downward to the MIDI value modifiers. A new generation is produced on each step of the system.

Various note-based parameters can be modified, using the bits from the Automata, including the trigger, pitch, velocity, duration, slice, and hold.

Alongside the note information, Automata also features four MIDI CC lanes, allowing you to automate parameters in your DAW. Other features are host transport sync and a scalable UI. Lectric Panda promises that Automata has a sample-accurate MIDI generation.

An interesting, very unique MIDI sequencer. The concept is a bit complicated, to be honest, which has probably put many people off. This might be one of the reasons why it’s now freeware.

Lectric Panda Stage

Much simpler and more classic is Stage, which is a minimal gain stage amplifier with built-in peak, RMS, and Crest Factor metering. You can also customize the meter ranges and offsets. There are also 1dB and .1dB Gain nudge buttons.

Like the Automata sequencer, Stage also has a scalable UI and integrated tool tips.
