Xunil-cloud CloudReverb is a new open-source, free algorithmic reverb plugin for macOS, Linux and Windows based on the CloudSeed VST.

Let’s stay with effects. What goes well with a free delay? Yes, a free reverb. There are a variety of free reverb plugins you can download, and I have a new one you shouldn’t miss.

Xunil-cloud has released CloudReverb, a new open-source free reverb plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

CloudReverb is a new algorithmic reverb that is based on the CloudSeed VST by Valdemar Erlingsson. It is an old open-source plugin for Windows (7 years old) that has not been updated for many years.

Xunil-cloud has rewritten the code for CloudReverb with JUCE, so it can also run on Linux, macOS, and Windows. It’s very welcome to see that the developer did this job, as it is a very comprehensive free reverb/reverb designer.

The signal chain starts with the input section and the mix knob that controls the amount of mixing between the two input channels. Next to this is a pre-delay that adds a delay to the signal before it enters the reverberation process

Then, after the pre-delay, you have additional low-cut and high-cut filters. You can enable a high-pass and low-pass option, giving you high-pass and low-pass filters to mangle the signals before the actual reverb.

Advanced Reverb Crafting

From here, it goes into the early reflection/diffusion section that consists of two components: a multi-tap delay (500ms delay up to 50 taps) and a series of Schroeder allpass filters to thicken up the reflections.
In the next step, it goes into the late reverberation block based on up to 12 parallel delay lines. Each delay line has a feedback control; the feedback signal is processed through a high- and low-shelf filter, as well as a first-order low-pass filter.

That’s not all. There is also a Schroeder allpass filter block that is placed in the feedback chain. Nice, you can also change the order in which the delay and the allpass filter are processed, by using the Late Stage Tap (30) control.

Further, a mixer melts all the elements (dry/wet mix, pre-delay, early, and late reflections) into a reverb. There is also a cross seed parameter that controls how the random values for the left and right channels are mixed.

Xunil-cloud CloudReverb ships with various presets that showcase the capabilities of the reverb engine.

First Impression

A very comprehensive, free, cross-platform reverb plugin with a wide range of sound options. It’s great that the developer has revived the plugin, as it sounds very good.

Xuntil-cloud CloudReverb is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST3, AU, and LV2 plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.

The code is open-source. According to the developer, it only tested the Linux and Windows versions not the macOS.
