ALM Stem Ripper captures up to eight audio channels simultaneously of your patches with ease, without the need for external hardware.
An audio recorder is a must-have if you want to capture your Eurorack modular synth jams. You either have a mixer with recording functionality, like the new Zoom L-6, or you use a traditional audio interface with a computer/tablet/phone.
If you want to record all channels individually, you’ll need a multi-track device.ALM has released the Stem Ripper, an audio recording device that will significantly simplify this process.
ALM Stem Ripper
Stem Ripper is a new 6HP 8-channel audio recorder module designed for immediate full patch recording without the need for external hardware. Recording large patches has never been easier and has now become part of the modular workflow.
It offers eight independent mono input jacks, each input has a large 20Vpp per input headroom, with an LED clip indication. Stem Ripper records all eight channels on individual tracks in a 16-bit 44.1 kHz multichannel data-stamped WAV file on a microSD card.
Neat, the record time is limited only by the SD card size (up to 1TB supported). This allows you to record hours-long jams. Two additional tracks within the output WAV contain a configurable stereo mixdown of the inputs.
Plus, the system adds an accurate automatic date stamping of recordings with a battery-backed clock. Once recorded, you can easily transfer the patch stems to a computer to mix, edit, or archive patches.
Alongside the new audio recorder, ALM also released the 2HP Thru’ output expander that duplicates the eight inputs to a row of unbuffered outputs. According to the developers, this eliminates the potential need for stacking patch cables at the expense of more case real estate.
First Impression
A clever idea to build an audio recorder into a compact module. It’s not a new concept, but it allows you to do multi-track recordings very easily of your jams.
This is an advantage over mixer+recorders, field recorders, or interfaces and computers, as it keeps you within the Eurorack workflow, and you don’t need extra hardware.
ALM Stem Ripper is available now for $375, and Thru Expander for $80. It includes a 64GB microSD card.
