Dystopian Waves Drox is a free Max for Live multi-effects device that infuses glitches, jumps, and stutters in your tracks.

Once you have produced a new track, you sometimes notice that the whole thing is still too clean and that something sparkling is missing. This is where effects come into play to bring sounds to life.

Dystopian Waves has just released Drox, a free M4L device for Ableton Live that shakes up your tracks a lot.

Drox is a new M4L multi-FX processor for Ableton Live that brings unpredictability, movement, and chaos to your tracks.

At the heart of Dystopian Waves Drox, you can find a combination of glitch, jump, and stutter effects, all programmable in just one device.

It starts on the left side with the drop effect, with three parameters that simulate tape dropouts and physical imperfections. It’s a creative effect for bringing vintage, Lo-Fi characters into tracks.

Then, you have the jump effect that triggers CD-style skips and jumps, resulting in fun, spontaneous, rhythmic variations.

Like the previous effect, you can control it with three parameters: density (how often the read head jumps), size (how long the playback continues from the jumped-on position), and range (how far the tape head can jump).

The most significant effect of the three is the stutter effect that generates flexible stuttered repetitions that can evolve dynamically. You can modify to your taste with the density, size, repeats, and random controls.

More exciting are the controls in the second row under the catchy visualization. Here, you can dive even further into the stutter effect and dial in random pitch shifts, reverse playback probability, and filtering that can happen during the stutter process.

At the last point of the signal chain, you can control the balance and playback direction of the processed audio with the master section. You get fine control over the dry/wet mix and forward/reverse playback.

First Impression

An exciting free multi-FX processor for Max for Live that you shouldn’t miss. It’s an intriguing tool for adding both subtle imperfections to tracks or creating crazy glitched and out-of-control soundscapes.

Dystopian Waves Drox is available now as a free download with an option to donate. It requires Ableton Live Suite or Live Standard with a Max for Live license.
